Surround Yourself with Good (MM)

“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”-Jim Rohn

We have all heard this quote or a variation of it at some point of our life.  Maybe it was in a class.  Maybe it came from your mother when she questioned you about the friends you kept as a teenager.  But it’s true.  It’s not about stereotyping.  It’s about the company you keep affecting your life and the decisions you make.

Think of five people you spend the most time with.  Are they achievers?  Creatives? Type A personalities? Intellectuals? Or are they procrastinators and just plain lazy.  There is absolutely nothing wrong with that if you are content with your present condition.  But if you want to make something out of yourself and succeed in life you have to make a change.

Now I know there is someone out there who is saying that you can make it in your own. I don’t believe that to be entirely true. I advocate that you need a distinct type of friends:

1) One person who is either older or achieved more than everyone in the group.

2) One person who is closely in the same position in life as you right now.

3) One person who is behind everyone else.

I call this the circle of success.  In this circle are real friends. Not associates. People who won’t talk behind your back. But rather tell you to your face you are jacked up. And be there to help you fix whatever the delimna.  A group of individuals who always have your best interest in mind. Who are true friends. Where succeeding as a group far outweigh the individuals.

But you have to perform and do your part. Know what you want to achieve in life and help each other get there. Watch the friend who has already achieved a lot. What is he doing that is working?  How can you implement that in your life, but for your goals?

Because if you hang around five people who are lazy, you will be lazy. If you surround yourself with those getting the most out of life, you will too. It’s all about become better.

  1. Absolutely true. We often underestimate the influence other people have in our lives. Loved the bit about the three types of friends we must have. Great strategy for life and success and everything else in between. Wonderful post. Thanks for sharing!
